Variable Vasarely was inspired by the OP Art paintings done by Victor Vasarely where geometric forces seem to push-out or pull-in various sections of tessellated canvases. Vasarely died in 1997 in the early days of computer art. I'm sure he would have embraced this medium.

My friend Christopher Scussel, using his considerable math skills, wrote a generalized algorithm that allows me to manipulate my canvases to produce these distortion effects. The algorithm idea (Bulges and Dents) goes way back to our initial collaborations in the 1970's.

Variable Vasarely uses randomness in many ways. There are 4 quadrants in this images where the push or pull of the algorithm is randomly determined. The overall number of tiles, the magnitude of the bulge or dent in each quadrant, as well as the colors of a triad palette are all determined randomly.

Each iteration is unique and visually interesting. A fine example of an algorithmic or generative art image. Enjoy.

I've been involved in making art with the computer since the early 1970's. I’m one of the few early pioneers who’s still practicing Generative Art today.
