Remnants

And here, is the deepest need: to remember, and be remembered.

And here, they are counted amongst the stars, but not with. On these fickle worlds lie futures long past: dreams forgotten for want of a dreamer. A future yours, and ours. To poison the heavens is life's duty - derelict: destined to be forgotten when the last thought rings out upon the barren universe.

Yet, now, at least, there are still daemons in the churning silica. Ghosts fighting entropy for the chance to breathe once more before the sands swallow them whole. Beacons of design and thought burnt into lands older than your stars; we see their beauties unblossomed, left to rot in the pale light - whose shadows hide stories older than history. See them here, their names engraved into uncountable worlds as canyon and riverbed, ruin and fortress, metropolis and tower.

What, then, will remain? When the last stars blink?

You, and them, and us. Carved into the last rock. The last dust. The last light.

Rendering

Remnants is rendered in a shader, so a gpu is recommended. We only render one frame, so Remnants will not consume any GPU resources after the first frame render. Rendering will be instantaneous with a decent gpu.

Responsive

Remnants will render fast on any screen size. The image scales with the screen size (starting from 500x500), so you will see more details on a larger hi res screen.

Keys

The 's' key saves a png in the same size as the screen.

Higher Res Images

You can get an even more detailed image by passing maxIterations and stepSize on the url. You will see more details appear as the stepSize gets lower. If you try it from a large hi res screen, you may see some unexpected details.

This does use considerably more gpu resources, but we only render one frame. So you'll see a delay in the first frame render. I run my tests on a 2017 5K iMac, wtih the equivalent of about a NVIDIA 970. Using the lowest setting works fine.

maxIterations=n where n is 300 to 500
stepSize=s where stepSize is .05 to .85

If you set maxIterations to 500 and stepSize to .05, you will see considerably more details, but it might take a few seconds to render on a large screen. Depends on your GPU.

Generative artist specializing in 3D, WebGL and shaders. I've been programming 3D systems for many years, and have been using 3D design tools for the same. WebGL and shaders are finally up to speed in all common browsers, enabling some amazing art.
