In Greek mythology Polyphemus was a one-eyed giant, a Cyclops, the son of Poseidon and Thoosa. In the Odyssey, he battles Odysseus and is blinded by the hero.

"Then from out the cave the mighty Polyphemus answered them: 'My friends, it is Noman that is slaying me by guile and not by force.' "
~ Homer's Odyssey, Book 9

Yes, Polyphemus was a monster - a man eating, one-eyed giant - but was there more to his story? Odysseus and his men did trespass and eat his food. They went on their adventure looking for "monsters" to kill, and they found them. But "monster"? If you mess with a snake and it bites you, you don't blame the snake do you?

Maybe there's more to these characters. Like us, maybe they have (or had) lives and just want to be left alone.
