The imagery used in this work began as an original photograph by the artists. During post-production, a single row of pixels was selected in each photograph and then stretched outwards in both directions to fill the entire frame. These rigid 'stretched pixel' compositions were then further manipulated into various painterly ‘pixel forms’. The works in the ‘Painterly Pixels’ series are generated by drawing upon 199 unique 'pixel forms'.

The 199 unique 'pixel forms' have been organised across 19 separate layers. When a work is generated, it will take one 'pixel form' from each layer. There is an equal probability for every ‘pixel form’, across each of the 19 layers. The number of 'pixel form' variations available at each layer are as follows: 21, 11, 8, 9, 11, 12, 9, 11, 10, 10, 12, 11, 11, 8, 12, 8, 5, 6, 14.
