“monuMOments” was inspired by the work of visual artist Penelope Umbrico, seeking a reflection on the era of techno fossils and on the relationship of human beings with technology and the environment as a whole, whether manufactured or natural. See more in
“Penelope Umbrico's MONUMENT explores the monolithic state of current technologies in relation to their obsolescence. Umbrico begins with the idea that all technologies - including the electronics we use at home and in the workplace - are in effect “black boxes” whose contents are largely incomprehensible to end users. Although we tend to think of screens as invisible and we never see the workings of our technologies, almost everything we learn and know these days is mediated through the filters of technology. Umbrico aims to demystify the black-box device and to engage the public in creative modes of transforming and visualizing the electronic detritus that accumulates in our homes and in landfills.” (https://www.bricartsmedia.org).
The algorithm initially simulates the static noise of old televisions and from there on, several elements and layers follow one another that, through different blending modes, colors, lights and shadows, shape the final image.
About the ultra rare feature, CASTING OUT NINES refers to the work of the same name done in 2020 that deals with the largest environmental crime in terms of extension that is known in the country, where hundreds of tons of crude oil were spilled on the coast of northeast Brazil.
Each of the nine photographs in the work represent one of the states reached, where a specific color was superimposed.
The colors superimposed on each of the images appeared by chance, or not so much, and were constructed from temporal data and the location of the appearance of the spots on Brazilian beaches. In the RGB palette of “oil” tones, the value of “R” came from the sum of the tens contained in the date of the first oil record in each of the states, as well as the values of “G” and “B” came from the sum of the numbers contained in the geographic coordinates of latitude and longitude, respectively, of the affected locations.
