Le Corbusier developed the grid for Unité d'habitation using a proportional measurement system based on his Modulor Man, with the collaboration of painter-architect Nadir Afonso. This is an abstract interpretation of the feel you get when looking in all those colorful balconies at Unité d'habitation. So many interpretations, so many possibilities. And all is in the colors.
The architect called the building La Cité Radieuse, or "the radiant city", and it has successfully accommodated a mix of uses ever since completion.
There are 23 different types of residence within the building, varying from small one-person homes to generous family units, and every home has at least one balcony.
It is located in the southern part of Marseille... And maybe, just maybe, on some sunny Sunday, all the balconies will be tidy, without clothes hanging on ropes.
