From Classic Inspiration to Modern Exploration: Dragon Curve Vortex

My latest generative artwork, Dragon Curve Vortex, draws inspiration from a foundational text in the field of computer art: Computer Graphics/Computer Art by Herbert W. Franke. On page 4, I encountered the dragon curve, a mathematical fractal that sparked Franke's series of plotter drawings titled DRAKULA (translated as "Dragon Curves, Superimposed"). These works, produced in collaboration with computer scientist Josef Vordermaier, utilized a program Vordermaier created to generate the imagery.

For many years, I carried the influence of this 1970s concept. Just as Franke had Vordermaier, I have my collaborator, Christopher Scussel. Together, we embrace the spirit of revisiting old ideas through a contemporary lens. In this vein, I challenged Chris to craft a new, interactive fractal algorithm for me to explore programmatically.

A Fractal Dance

A dragon curve is a self-similar fractal curve, constructed using recursive methods like Lindenmayer systems. In Dragon Curve Vortex, this mathematical form transforms into a dynamic spatial entity. I generate a vortex by selecting a random number of curves, each with a varying level of complexity, to spin at diverse angles around the image center. To introduce a touch of visual intrigue, the artwork incorporates a distortion field. This field, a canvas of bulges and dents, stretches and compresses the vortex while maintaining the integrity of the underlying fractal pattern. Color selection is also driven by controlled randomness, adding another layer of captivating dynamism.
