Categorizing Zaojing Structures

Zaojing structures can be categorized into three primary forms: linear, vortex, and rectangular lintel. In the "linear" form, columns extend from the outer edges towards the center in a straight line; in the "vortex" form, columns spiral inwards like a vortex; while the "rectangular lintel" form presents an octagonal shape, with columns extending from the outer edges towards the center. Regardless of the chosen form, Zaojing is meticulously crafted by stacking layers from bottom to top and from outer to inner.

The Zaojing Project

In this "Zaojing" project, I focused on creating the "linear" form of Zaojing structures, offering both octagonal and circular versions. Throughout the creative process, I simulated the construction steps, layering and completing each level one step at a time.

Initially, I established the well-shaped structure, then added beams, columns, and decorations, culminating in the intricately detailed inner patterns. Only after did I incorporate the columns connecting to the exterior. To create a sense of depth on a flat surface, I utilized gradient effects extensively, allowing colors to gradually deepen from the outer periphery to the inner octagonal or circular shapes.

In terms of color selection, besides the warm tones commonly associated with traditional Chinese temples, such as red, brown, and green, I introduced unique color options like blue and purple from the cool color palette. I even adjusted the initially harmonious Zaojing color schemes, increasing color contrast to enable the artwork to seamlessly navigate between tradition and modernity.
