"Yarn Balls'' are minimalistic. One line travels on the canvas boundaries, compressed and traveling from one circle to another. It is based on two relatively simple algorithms: circle packing and Traveling Salesman Problem (TSP). RNG is also used to make the random curves bouncing inside each circle.

"Yarn Balls" are proof of time. Time is an essential element of this artwork. Not only does the plot physically take between 3 and 6 hours to execute, but also the pen never lifts up: it traces and consumes the whole sharpie pen life for a kilometer of ink, with a single line curve. To generate each output, the generator have to calculate a lot of things, it is very slow to compute as it can take a lot of time to find the most optimal line connections (solving TSP). The algorithm ran between minutes to even hours to offer an optimized travel.

"Yarn Balls" are generative art, yet curated, by @greweb

Unlike in the "Plottable NFT" paradigm, outputs has been curated and already physically plotted. The NFT therefore is not an "utility token" but more a "ownership proof".

Unlike what a fx(hash) generative collection is, the collection is carefully curated by the artist, therefore fx(hash) wasn't the platform used for this work.

Nethertheless, this is still generative art: a generator was developed and used to produces the chosen ones. Precalculating outputs and curating from them was particularly relevant based on how slow the algorithm is as explained previously. It was also interesting to control the palette of colors to make a balanced collection.

About the sale and conditions

The items will therefore be sold on objkt.com using Tezos cryptocurrency as "NFTs". The first NFT sale will unlock the possibility for the buyer to request the physical piece, this acts as a first-sale ownership, it is up to the primary buyer to transfer the NFT to any secondary buyer if this happens in the future (NB: it is not an utility token like a "Plottable NFT" can be).

Why NFTs? The choice to still use NFT for this physical sale is a continuity of my work as a registration of that work on the blockchain, the choice of Tezos is community-based (such a great community, your engagement with my work have been amazing, thanks a lot to you all), price-based (plateform/tezos fees are cheap) and more ecological which isn't different (if not more optimised) than using etsy or any mainstream service.

The sale will be done in two phases: the first phase will be a 1-week auction, opened to all. The auction will start on a sale price of 100tez, if the auction is not met, the items will then later likely be put back as a regular sale (of either the initial 100tez of the auction or possibly higher) and i reserve myself to stop it at any point in time if not sold. Before collecting, please make sure to connect your Tezos account to your social identity (tzprofiles) so i can contact you back, alternatively you will need to PM me on twitter @greweb.

The art will be shipped worldwide in cardboard tubes, the shipping price is covered by the sale.

Good bye, Yellow yarn balls!

To finish with an anecdote, I had to abandon one item out of the collection: the yellow one. It's way too bright and light and I wanted to keep a color consistency on the collection. It's still very cool to share this story here and I will keep it for myself!
