Boson

Physicists love classifying nature's phenomena. There is a current consensus about the existence of small things they call particles. These particles are of different kinds, and the particle physicist tries to throw each kind of these particles in different categories. The current consensus about arrangement of these categories and the underlying laws is called The Standard Model.

This Standard Model offers two classes of elementary particles : bosons and fermions.

Fermions are the constituents of what physicists (and most people agree) to call matter. Physicists and western philosophers often describe matter by its contingency: when there is matter somewhere, there cannot be more matter at the same place. In other words, two particles of matter can't share the same position at the same time. The longer version of this idea is called Pauli exclusion principle, but no need to crunch quantum equations to understand... Just imagine what happens when two people want to sit on the same chair at the same time. This seems impossible.

Bosons are believed to be somewhat different. They are described as force carriers (messenger particles, intermediate particles). Physicists want to describe the whole universe's interactions by four forces; the most famous ones being gravity (Higgs/HEB bosons) and electromagnetic force (photons) – think of weight and magnets. And yes, bosons can share the same state : the more there are in one spot, the stronger the force.

Pixel

You're most probably reading this text on a digital screen made of millions of pixels. We call pixels the minimum size unit of a digital image. Colored pixels are made of three quasi-monochromatic light sources : Red, Green and Blue. By mixing the intensity of light emitted for each color, digital screens are able to simulate "almost" all the colors of visible spectrum.

Metamers

The perception of colors is another vast topic, but to make it short: colors exist only in our minds.

Physicists describe light as a dual phenomenon. Light can be described and observed as a wave (a perturbation evolving through an electromagnetic field) as well as a particle (photon). Some light can be made of only one color-wavelength-energy, they call this kind of pure light monochromatic. It can also be made of an addition of multiple colors-wavelengths-energies. The intensity of each color-wavelength-energy constitutes the light's spectrum.

By stimulating our optical nervous cells it's possible for different light spectra to be perceived by the observer as the same "color". This phenomenon is called metamerism.

BPM

Some images have the incredible power of triggering feelings in the spectator*.* Some will use words like "vibration", or "resonance" to describe the interaction between a work of art and a spectator. Some would say that "something happened between them and the artwork", some kind of distant interaction.

Thinking about the notion of discernability and its relations to the one of fungibility, we can wander in thoughts around the special relation that is to "own" a work of art in the age of mechanical reproduction.

To discert about visual aesthetics in pure digital-screen mediated way brings the researcher to experiment with these notions : light, particles, space and colors.

This BPM collection is also an experiment with discernability : there are 8 millions particles positioned in a 3D space, and each of these particles emits a different color. If the screen on which the spectator displays the resulting picture is able to match the picture resolution (3840x2160 32 bits pixels), each non-zero pixel is the observable result of the addition of one or more particles light sources. The combination of these pixels seen on a screen emits an image made of light that can also carry a force.

Generative

Working on generative algorithms is often pleasantly intoxicating. Sometimes the experimenter would allow oneself to get lost and put its main direction aside for a moment, just to observe and enjoy the current result. This can lead to store hundreds or thousands of beautiful outputs, most of them which will never be shown. This experiment shall not suffer this fate, hence the process of making this collection and article.

From 1000 to 66 pictures

The algorithm was told to generate 1000 pictures in 3840x2140 resolution. The images were then sorted by file weight (as they are stored as bitmaps, the more illuminated pixels the more information in the file) and then visually sorted according to criterias like the aesthetic feeling triggered by the colors or geometry of the picture. Each one was rated between 1 and 5 and only the better rated ones (4-5) were selected to be included in this collection.

The Boson-Pixel Metamers collection

The collection is best experienced fullscreen on a recent monitor at least Full HD (1920x1080) but prefer a 4K screen if available, this way, each particles will be seen on exactly one whole pixel.
