Self + EmoShawn
written by EmoShawn
The past few years I've been learning to code as a means for visual creativity on the web (three.js <3). So my first explorations needed a 3D model to play with, and that meant firing up Blender. After a sketchy jpeg -> svg web conversion, I had my base to have fun with. And here was where playfulness guided my process, as I balanced new technical tools and doing things with them that god never intended.
Randomness always finds a way to creep into the final outcome. Wireframe mode isn't supposed to be beautiful, but it was. I found myself trying to mimic its gradient in javascript. Though I eventually ditched the web version for blender's renderer, the glorious glitch of z-fighting also bled into my piece. And along the way, I randomly used a placeholder texture, "Inkedunnamed_LI.jpg." It happened to be a picture I took of myself. Somehow this dull picture I took for some gov't identity confirmation fittingly ended up being 100% of my color palette.
I'm happy to have reached a point of satisfaction with my piece, and make it across the finish line. The whole process had it's own series of self breakthroughs, filled with impossible anguish followed by easy breathing.
