Unknown Pleasures is the debut studio album by English rock band Joy Division, released on 15 June 1979 by Factory Records. The album was recorded and mixed over three successive weekends at Stockport's Strawberry Studios in April 1979, with producer Martin Hannett contributing a number of unconventional recording techniques to the group's sound. The cover artwork was designed by artist Peter Saville, using a data plot of signals from a radio pulsar 🔗

Frequency of a signal

--------------------------------------------------vvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvv--------------------------------------------------

CP 1919 is the first pulsar observed in detail.

It is not a Fourier analysis as sometimes stated, but rather an image of the intensity of successive radio pulses, as stated in the Cambridge Encyclopaedia. In simple terms, the image is a “stacked plot” of the radio emissions given out by a pulsar, a “rotating neutron star”. 🔗

PSR B1919+21 is a pulsar with a period of 1.3373 seconds[1] and a pulse width of 0.04 seconds. Discovered by Jocelyn Bell Burnell on 28 November 1967, it is the first discovered radio pulsar.[2] The power and regularity of the signals were briefly thought to resemble an extraterrestrial beacon, leading the source to be nicknamed LGM, later LGM-1 (for "little green men").[3]

The original designation of this pulsar was CP 1919, which stands for Cambridge Pulsar at RA 19h 19m . It is also known as PSR J1921+2153 and is located in the constellation of Vulpecula. 🔗

Because of this discovery, In 1974, Antony Hewish became one the first astronomers to be awarded the Nobel Prize in physics. Sadly, Jocelyn Bell, who made the initial discovery operating the telescope while she was Hewish’s Ph.D student, was not awarded the prize. 🔗
