While I’ve been lucky to meet so many incredible people in the fx community over the past months, there are many more I haven’t, so now is the perfect chance to introduce myself properly. My name is Charlie, but as for who I am, well — I’m a creative technologist, and that’s something I’d like to unpack a bit.

My previous work includes feature films, tv/episodic series, event playback, games, and even theme parks. Even if my portfolio of works is diverse, I’ve always had generative/procedural systems and data design at the forefront of my practice. The path that led me to generative art arrived there by way of glitch art back in my university days.

It didn’t take long for me to discover Kim Asendorf’s Pixel Sorting work; that opened my eyes to processing. From there, the rest was history — I studied digital design focused on computational methodologies and data presentation and even wrote my dissertation on generative art.

Over the years, I’ve hopped from community to community and never once found myself in one as inviting, kind, and authentic as ours here at fxhash (though Newgrounds still has a place in my heart). Every day, I learn from the community and am inspired by the culture we share and build together — plus, I get tons of laughs from the high-tier shithousery in the server.

For better or worse, I may be best known for handling artist verifications. However, I’m doing plenty more behind the scenes. Among other tasks, I’m helping with the platform’s creative direction, a direction partly determined by the community’s responses to the recent fxhash survey, as well as my vast experience with visual systems in and out of the crypto-space. This brings me to a vital aspect of the work that the rest of the fxhash team and I do. We’re ensuring fxhash is a safe and democratic community, which I’m committed to furthering and exploring with you in the future so we can all make fxhash the absolute best it can be.

It might go without saying, but I fully believe in what fxhash is now and what it has the potential to become. We have an astonishingly talented and multifaceted team building open tools for artists, collectors, and now writers (!!!) championing generative art. Stepping ever further into the world of fxhash and generative art means everything to me, and walking those steps with all of you — the community, the team, and the artists — will never cease being surreal.
