Generative Art Night in Singapore
written by Clara
The discourse around generative art has experienced an unprecedented amount of expansion and interest in recent years, especially with the adoption of blockchain technology. Much of the historic investigations and exhibitions of generative art have orbited around Europe and the US, highlighting artists of these regions and their contributions to the field.
As the discourse continues to grow globally, there is renewed opportunity to develop the knowledge of generative art created across other parts of the world, including in Asia.
Historically, generative principles have deep roots in the arts and culture of the Asian continent, such as in the traditional crafts of Indonesian Batik, Chinese paper-cutting and Indian Rangoli, where systematic methods generate complex matters. More recently, pioneers such as Ryoji Ikeda and aaajiao have actively incorporated code into their practice, often challenging the traditional boundaries between man and the machine, philosophy and modern technology, and more.
To further support these artistic explorations and innovations in Asia, fx(hash) showcased the works of 13 artists from the region at "Generative Art Night" in Singapore. The featured artists included Yazid, Gin_, Jimi Wen, Mido, Agrimony, Sam Tsao, Jinyao Lin, Kalen Iwamoto, Ciput, Yi-Wen Lin, Che-Yu Wu and Reva Fan, and a dedicated section on locally-based Random Combo. These works explored a wide range of themes from geometric composition and ratios, ecological systems, to modelling the motion of ocean waves.
Many of these artists, such as Yazid and Sam Tsao, have also been some of the first to mint code-based artworks on the Tezos blockchain and set precedent for the generative art community to evolve around the network.

As we look towards the future of generative art, Asia's role becomes not just complementary but essential to the global narrative. The region's diverse and rich artistic heritage and rapid technological innovation and adoption offers unique lenses through which to understand and appreciate the possibilities of generative art.
