Fauxfive

When I first saw people start posting #5tezcollections last week I knew I had to do one for a few reasons:
- The idea was started in response to the Tezos foundation offering 5 xtz to anyone that spent over $100 in Ethereum gas fees in the past 6 months. ETH Gas fees were what brought me to Tezos over a year ago after quickly realizing that spending several dollars per transaction was neither tenable nor desirable for me.
- Finding great art that’s only a few cents is one of my favourite things about the Tezos marketplaces, like going through a thrift or record store and finding a few things you like amongst all of the clutter.
- I’m always on a fairly small limited budget and trying not to spend all my tez in the first few days after reloading.
- I love discovering new artists, and a random challenge like this is a great way to do just that.
#goals
My goal for this collection was to collect as much quality art as possible from a wide variety of artists, styles and media to show that not only can you collect a lot of art for only 5 tez, but you can also find a lot of quality art that suits your personal tastes. Everything in this collection caught my eye or my attention for one reason or another; nothing was added as filler. I was able to collect generative art (long-form, short-form, and params-based), AI art, Illustration, photography, motion/animated art, interactive art, art with audio, vintage propaganda art, a 1/1, and even a “right click save” NFT of the Mona Lisa herself to top it all off!
Strategy
I set a rough ceiling of 0.5 xtz per item and got started with a handful of pieces on fxhash. Using the search filter makes it easy to look for potential projects by setting the Price range from 0 - 0.5 xtz and the Mint progress to On going and sorting by Price (low to high).
After that I headed over to OBJKT and did basically the same thing: sorting 0 - 0.5xtz and the collection to either hic et nunc or Versum Items, sorting by Price: low to high and then scrolling through dozens of pages (or entering random page numbers in the URL) until something caught my eye and got added to the collection.
One thing I really love about web3 is being able to creep through people’s wallets to see what else they have collected—it reminds me of the early Napster/Limewire days where you could look though other people’s music folders to discover new stuff from people that had similar tastes.
This challenge has opened my eyes to the idea of creating a large low-cost open edition piece as a self promotion / gift for future collectors to find my work.
I encourage you to check out my fauxFive gallery and click on anything that catches your eye — it’s probably still available for almost free. Thanks to fx(hash), OBJKT, the Tezos Foundation, and everyone in the price discussion channel that made #5tezcollection a thing.
