The presence of text-oriented art in visual culture is not fleeting. For centuries, poets and literary artists have experimented with the graphic capabilities of text—working with words to create textual configurations, semiotic images, and visual poetry. Since the early 20th century, modern, conceptual, and contemporary artists have incorporated text into their pictures. In the mid-20th century, artists began to display minimalist artwork with a purely textual theme. Between the 1950s and 1970s, the era of conceptual art became popular. The abstract movement advocated the definition of artworks as ideas rather than objects, so this period supported the "materialization of the art object."
