About Timelines
written by fauxjebus
The impetus for this project came from the fxhash twitter account announcing the #fxhashturnsone event on Nov 3, 2022. With some leftover inspiration references from Hope—primarily this image of one of Sol LeWitt’s Wavy Brushstrokes gouaches from the mid 90’s.
...Which he did quite a few of—it feels like a generative collection: Simple rules applied over and over again with slightly different variables.
So, with only a week to make something with my admittedly still fairly basic coding skills, I started adapting and simplifying the code from Hope to make something like those wavy brushstrokes. There was a “chaos” brush mode that we omitted because it didn’t quite fit.
I made the lines a single stroke and started playing with variables relating to periods of time like 365, 52 & 12. I also experimented with various blend modes, noise/textures and combinations with single colours.
I (barely) decided that I like the clean solid vector looking lines with no texture, and then when I started trying colour palettes, I liked how much more vibrancy, variety and randomness that brought to them as well as the connection back to the Sol LeWitt work.
I also added straight lines into the mix.
And sometimes the straight lines can be all horizontal. This reminded me of another inspiration from Hope - these minimalist movie colour palette posters.
Thicker lines give those nice big bands of colour.
Thinner lines and various blend modes create all sorts of smaller lines and colour shifts.
Final parameters:
- There can be 12, 52 or 365 lines.
- The lines can be straight, curvy, or both.
- Straight lines can be angled or horizontal.
- The line thickness can be random from 1 – 365, or all 12, 52 or 365 pts.
- 12 colour palettes.
Finally, #fxhashturnsone is about celebrating the community and giving back. I wanted to donate to The Coding Train for teaching me how to code p5js, but they don’t have a tezos wallet so Daniel Shiffman recommended sending it to the Processing Foundation, which will receive 33.3% of all primary + secondary sales. Also the Waiting To Be Signed podcast will receive 33.3% of primary + secondary sales—thank you Will & Trinity for the great weekly recaps, interviews and fx(hash) content. Keep on keepin’ on!
Thanks for reading about Timelines. There are still some mints left, help yourself!
