Protests have intensified this week in Iran over the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini in police custody after she was arrested for allegedly wearing her headscarf too loosely. Amini died on Sept. 16 three days after her arrest in Tehran, and many Iranians are alleging that she was killed by law enforcement. Protestors have faced a brutal crackdown from the government who have deployed riot police, resulting in arrests, injuries and at least 17 deaths, according to the state media.
Iranian authorities claim that Amini died of heart failure, but her family and protestors across Iran accuse the government of covering up her murder. The international protests have expanded to express anger over a range of issues, not just restrictions women face over hijabs and more generally in Iran but also against the current regime. At one Iranian protest, a street full of Iranians chanted “death to the oppressor, be it the shah or the supreme leader!”
Mahsa Amini, 22, was arrested on Sept. 13 while visiting Tehran by the notorious morality police who enforce compulsory conservative Islamic behavior and dress. Hijabs are mandatory to wear in public for all women in Iran, regardless of religion or nationality. Amini was accused of violating the country’s law on headscarves.
Iran’s security forces said that upon her arrest, Amini was taken to a detention centre where she received training on hijab rules, and it was there that she collapsed from a heart attack. She died on Sept. 16 in a Tehran hospital.
Amini’s family disputes that account and said that police beat Amini in their patrol car on the way to the detention centre and that witnesses saw it happen. Amini’s father told an Iranian news outlet that he wasn’t allowed to see her body in the hospital, but that he caught a glimpse of her foot and it was bruised. Reports indicate that her death was caused by a skull fracture from heavy blows to the head, according to the Associated Press.
More than 30 people, the majority in Amini’s Kurdistan province, have been killed, and hundreds more have been injured or arrested, according to rights groups and news reports. The government has blocked Instagram and WhatsApp and cut or slowed access to the internet and cellular service in much of the country.
Iran’s military and Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) have warned they will escalate their clampdown if demonstrations do not stop — though as of Friday there was no sign of the unrest and anger abating.
Amini’s death also became a symbol for political and economic frustrations. Chants have referenced the brutality of security forces and how authorities act with impunity, and have denounced clerical control. Some have yelled “Death to the dictator” in reference to the country’s supreme leader.
Many of the same economic grievances fuelling unrest sparked nationwide protests in 2019, which were the most widespread demonstrations since the country’s 1979 revolution. Iranians are beset by sky-high unemployment and inflation. Western sanctions are one cause of the collapsed economy. Negotiations between Washington, Tehran and Europe to return to the 2015 nuclear deal and repeal many of those sanctions remain stalled.
The official figure of those killed in the protests rose to 35 by Saturday, Reuters reported, as Iran’s archconservative President Ebrahim Raisi pledged to crack down on the demonstrations. Norway-based Hengaw Organization for Human Rights and news reports have said hundreds of protesters have been injured, with tens of people arrested across the country.
State-backed news agency Tasnim reported Thursday that four IRGC members had been killed, including one who had been shot and another stabbed. Some demonstrators have targeted police stations and IRGC forces.
On Friday, demonstrators at several state-organized rallies called for perpetrators of alleged violence against security forces to be executed. In signs the crackdown could escalate, the IRGC called on Iran’s feared judiciary to prosecute protesters, and Iran’s army on Friday put out a statement saying it would “confront the enemies’ various plots to ensure security.”
